Heart Beats Music

Heart Beats music is a Somerset club for younger adults with learning disabilities. They run music sessions that aim to challenge rural isolation, giving a social framework to young people with additional needs whilst also bringing them together with their peers who may or may not have additional needs.

Currently a mixture of young people with learning disabilities in and beyond education, A-Level music students and young adults interested in music comprise these sessions. This integrated group is mirrored in schools where mainstream and SEN facilities sit side by side, where they run integrated ‘music education by encounter’ sessions and mixed mentoring groups. All their group members are encouraged to lead pieces of music, and they also provide opportunities for group members to co-run outreach and training workshops with Heart Beats music.

Their sessions enable coherent and meaningful communication between peers, helps build friendships and assists with building confidence among the young people who participate.
