BitterSuite
BitterSuite are a company exploring how to re-imagine the classical concert through the senses.
They have developed two original concerts, one for Debussy’s String Quartet in G and one for an original commission with composer, Tanya Auclair. At their core they are about collaboration, experimentation and playing with the senses as a way to enhance the experience of listening to music.
From January – March 2014, BitterSuite ran an education project for 12-17 year olds funded as part of the Sound Connections Innovate series. They worked with a group of vulnerable young people based in North Croydon. All participants were referred to them by social services.
They challenged participants to connect with classical music, explore their senses and engage creatively with the music as a group. Each week, through improvisation, experimentation, and group discussion, the young people who participated in the workshops would form new links between their senses and broaden their musical influences. Each participant had the opportunity to create a new representation of a piece of classical music: a graffiti mural, a perfume, a movement piece, a series of tastes and a texture score.
